Why Post-Treatment Care Matters
Whether you’ve just completed a chemical peel, injectable treatment, microneedling session, or laser procedure, proper at-home care is essential for achieving the best possible results. Following your medspa treatment, your skin may be more sensitive, and the healing process requires attention and care.
To help you recover safely and effectively, we’ve outlined the most important post-treatment guidelines to follow at home.
General Post-Treatment Care Guidelines
While every treatment is unique, these foundational care tips apply to most non-surgical medspa services:
1. Avoid Sun Exposure
Your skin will likely be more sensitive to UV rays after procedures like laser therapy, microneedling, or chemical peels. For at least 48 to 72 hours post-treatment:
- Stay indoors as much as possible
- Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- Use hats or protective clothing when outdoors
2. Skip Heat and Sweating
Avoid saunas, hot showers, steam rooms, and intense workouts for at least 24 to 48 hours, or as recommended. Heat can increase inflammation, disrupt healing, and irritate freshly treated skin.
3. Keep Your Hands Off
Resist the urge to touch, pick, or scratch treated areas, especially after facials, microneedling, or injectables. This helps prevent infection and allows the skin to heal evenly.
Treatment-Specific Post-Care Tips
After Injectables (Botox, Dysport, Fillers)
- Remain upright for at least 4 hours following the procedure
- Avoid massaging the injection sites
- Wait at least 24 hours before resuming vigorous exercise
- Use ice packs sparingly to reduce swelling or bruising
After Microneedling or RF Microneedling
- Expect mild redness or a “sunburned” feeling for up to 48 hours
- Avoid makeup for 24 hours
- Use a gentle cleanser and hyaluronic acid serum
- Do not exfoliate or use active ingredients (like retinoids or acids) for at least 3 to 5 days
After Chemical Peels
- Skin may flake or peel—do not pick
- Use hydrating creams and gentle cleansers
- Avoid exfoliating products until skin has fully healed
- Stay away from direct sunlight and follow strict SPF use
After Laser Treatments (IPL, Resurfacing)
- Redness, swelling, and sensitivity are normal for several days
- Apply cool compresses if needed
- Use fragrance-free, medical-grade skincare
- Avoid active skincare ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid for at least one week
What Products Should You Use?
After any medspa procedure, your provider will likely recommend or prescribe a post-treatment skincare regimen. Stick to products that are:
- Fragrance-free
- Non-comedogenic
- Formulated for sensitive or post-procedure skin
Common staples include:
- Gentle cleansers (e.g., creamy or hydrating formulas)
- Soothing moisturizers (with ceramides or hyaluronic acid)
- Physical sunscreens (with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
Avoid introducing any new skincare products during your recovery period.
Know When to Call Your Provider
While mild redness, swelling, or tenderness is normal, you should contact your provider immediately if you experience:
- Excessive or prolonged pain
- Signs of infection (pus, fever, increased swelling)
- Severe bruising or allergic reaction
- Any unexpected side effects
